At Fairhope Organic School, we recognize that every child is unique and possesses an innate desire to learn. Our focus is on creating a supportive and flexible environment that fosters this natural curiosity, rather than imposing rigid structures that may hinder a child’s growth.
In 1907, Marietta Johnson founded the School of Organic Education based off these principles in the experimental coastal town of Fairhope, AL. She believed that through play and interaction with peers, and with the gentle guidance of instructors, children learn the crucial knowledge of their innate potential.

The Fairhope Organic School provides an environment for each child to learn
as naturally as in any other setting – without grades, tests or time limits – without pressure. We understand that each child learns at their own pace. Our approach emphasizes individualized learning plans, allowing students to explore their interests and develop their unique talents.
We encourage creativity and self-expression through project-based learning, experiential learning, arts integration, and opportunities for independent exploration.

The Organic School Philosophy believes the traditional school model is at odds with the natural learning styles of children, which are ever-changing and developing intellectually, psychologically, and emotionally. We postpone and relax enforced structure according to the individual needs and abilities of each child. We balance teacher-driven instruction by providing the appropriate time, space and materials to prompt spontaneous, creative and self-inspired activity. Since the beginning of the 20th century, these methods have produced creative, engaged and motivated learners – happily active participants in developing and nourishing their minds, bodies, and spirits.

We are currently accepting applications for students in PreK through 8th grade for our 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 school years.
