The Fairhope Organic School

Where living is learning, and
learning is living.

The Marietta Johnson School of Organic Education

A private, non-profit, independent, alternative school in Fairhope, Alabama

Nurturing Inquisitive Minds Since 1907

“The greatest minds are those able to use the spirit of play in their work.”

The Organic School philosophy believes the traditional school model is at odds with the natural learning styles of children, which are ever-changing and developing intellectually, psychologically, and emotionally.

In 1907, Marietta Johnson founded the School of Organic Education in the experimental coastal town of Fairhope, AL. She believed that through play and interaction with peers, and with the gentle guidance of instructors, children learn the crucial knowledge of their innate potential.

Our Story

Marietta Johnson’s school was a magnet to young teachers and artists, and was instrumental in building the reputation of Fairhope as an artists’ colony.

Philosophy

We believe one must educate the entire organism – mind, body and spirit, in a non-competitive environment.

Admissions

Our goal is for all families to have affordable access to the progressive education and agile learning we offer.

The Organic Dream for Every Child:

A sound, accomplished body, a sympathetic, intelligent mind, and a sweet, sincere spirit.

The Organic School Philosophy believes the traditional school model is at odds with the natural learning styles of children, which are ever-changing and developing intellectually, psychologically, and emotionally. We postpone and relax enforced structure according to the individual needs and abilities of each child. We balance teacher-driven instruction by providing the appropriate time, space and materials to prompt spontaneous, creative and self-inspired activity. Since the beginning of the 20th century, these methods have produced creative, engaged and motivated learners – happily active participants in developing and nourishing their minds, bodies, and spirits.

“When children are given the ability to use materials freely and are encouraged to be creative through the use of free play, their minds sharpen, providing ample opportunity for the development of sound judgment, critical thinking, and problem solving skills.”
